Bloody Hell, I’ll call it both.” You tell ’em, Edith!Īs an unanticipated side-effect of my gross ignorance of early 20th Century supernatural short fiction, I am surprised and delighted by this addition to the Wordsworth Tales of Mystery And The Supernatural imprint (or, as we like to call it, TOMAToS). I thought it was scandalous when JK Rowling wrote a book with sex in it, but that’s nothing compared to the head-twisting British schoolkids must have received opening their copy of The Power of Darkness - Tales of Terror.Īnd what’s with the two titles? That’s what the protagonist, Will, ends up doing, of course, with some comrades of his. However, some people have managed to hide from the Tripods and are Capless, and they seek out boys (but not girls, apparently) who are brave enough to escape society and flee to the White Mountains. The Tripods, giant three-legged metal things, control the humans with Caps, given to them at a coming-of-age ceremony. Rating: 3/5 The White Mountains describes a world where, after an alien (machine?) invasion, society has reverted back to medieval times and are now under the dominion of the Tripods. For Will, his time of freedom is about to end–unless he can escape to the White Mountains, where the possibility of freedom still exists. But for a brief time in each person’s life–in childhood–he is not a slave. They have no control over their thoughts or their lives. Now people unquestioningly accept the Tripods’ power. ![]() Long ago, the Tripods–huge, three-legged machines–descended upon Earth and took control. The White Mountains, by John Christopher, was published in 1967 by Simon & Schuster. ![]() ![]() An American bluestocking with a passion for mathematics, nothing about Claire appeals to the ton, and nothing about the ton appeals to her. Lady Claire Cavendish is a fish out of water. The hero and heroine contrast nicely, the chemistry between them is excellent, it’s nice and steamy (not too much, not too little), and there’s just the right amount of tension to keep the reader on his/her toes. That said, this fresh take on the classic Pygmalion story is both entertaining and enjoyable to read. It’s definitely different in tone and style than the majority of regencies I read, and I still can’t decide how I feel about it. Rodale’s modern style juxtaposed against a traditional regency romance, and I struggled with the book as a consequence. ![]() But did I like it? I’m still on the fence. Did I enjoy reading it and was I entertained? Yes, and yes. ![]() I struggled to begin this review because I’m still not sure how I felt about Lady Claire Is All That. ![]() |
