To remedy the problem of dangerous, living dead, there is always a sorcerer with the title of Abhorsen, who is essentially a Necromancer himself (or herself), only in the reverse he puts the dead to rest. These living Dead are raised by Necromancers, or black magicians, who roam the Old Kingdom or live in Death, using Hands to do their bidding. (Those who live near the border know the truth of it, especially on days when the wind is blowing out of the Old Kingdom.) These dangerous spirits range from undead corpses known as Dead Hands to supernatural beings known as Free Magic elementals. The novel is set in two neighbouring fictional countries: To the south lies Ancelstierre, which has a technology level and society similar to that of early-20th century England, and to the north lies the Old Kingdom, where magic works and dangerous spirits roam the land - a fact officially denied by the government of Ancelstierre and disbelieved by most of Ancelstierre's inhabitants. It was written in 1995 and is succeeded by Lirael, Abhorsen and two more books (yet to be written). It focuses on the journey of Sabriel as she inherits her destiny - Abhorsen, the destroyer of the Dead. The first book in 'The Old Kingdom series' (also known as the Abhorsen Trilogy in North America) written by Australian author Garth Nix. Meljean Brook, The Kraken King (Iron Seas book 4). A good SFR novel contains all the elements I enjoy - a dire situation in an intergalactic location where anything can and does happen, a mix of military and civilians working together (or in opposition), a growing attraction between the hero and heroine as they race against time to solve the problem, escape the dangers, save the day! And of course the Happily Ever After ending. I'm going to start with my own answer, because I'm thrilled that Mission to Mahjundar (A Sectors SF Romance) received an award. I asked each of the winning authors (listed with their winning books): What do you find so appealing about writing science-fiction romance? The basic philosophy behind this approach is to help connect readers with books. The theme of the SFR Galaxy Awards is inclusiveness, recognizing multiple science-fiction romance books and/or the standout elements they contain. Green of Spacefreighters Lounge and Heather Massey of The Galaxy Express, this event honors a variety of standout stories. I'm devoting this column to the winners of this year's SFR Galaxy Awards. Complex, clear-eyed and big-hearted, funny, sad, and wise, it is a novel to cherish and to remember. It is the story of joys unrealized and opportunities regained. Un Divan à Tunis is certainly no exception to that: on the level of society, there is secretive behaviour but not in the interpersonal contacts. The Dutch are called ‘direct’ in their communication style but hey, nothing beats the Tunisians in their directness. Tunisia won my heart after I went there to give diversity trainings in several companies. But… issues occur from unexpected angles… She wants to be meaningful in her job and Tunisians need her. Selma moves from Paris to Tunis where she was born because Paris has many psychologists and Tunis has none. Un Divan à Tunis is a great movie that combines fun with food for thought. Otherwise, I may still be writing by the time I turn 100! Once I can write full-time, and have someone that can handle more of the marketing for me, I will aim for a word target of one million words, just to catch up with the number of books that are already outlined and ready to write on my laptop. This is about 3-4 books, plus the short story and anthology. My word target for this year is just over half a million words. I will also release another one of my Elemental short stories, and partake in an Anthology. This year I will be branching out into dystopian fantasy, as well as starting a new dragon series. It is like having a second and third job… but I love every moment of it. I still have a full-time job, so I write, do marketing, editing, and everything else book related after hours and weekends. I have stories enough (they are piling up like a TBR list on my laptop), and simply not enough time to write them (yet). Is it as easy as you thought it would be?ĭreaming? Definitely! Putting them into words? Not so much, hahaha. *Your dream from a young age has been to put your imagination into words. This applies when we shop, when we look for a job… or when we like someone! For example, in the case of falling in love with a married man, you might think that if he is “taken” it is because he is really worth it. We always want what is missing, what is unobtainable or what is unique. In the case of falling in love with something impossible, the reasons could be: Valuing what you cannot have Of course everyone has the right to do what they want in life, but the problem lies in how much we suffer for our decisions, habits or choices. Looking for answers to our quest for the impossibleĭid you spend more than one time “eyeing” someone you couldn’t have for different reasons? Do you ever look at a person who is married or engaged? Do you love forbidden situations? But if the impossible is something frequent in your life, maybe this article can help you. Of course, the heart often has reasons that reason does not understand, as the popular saying goes. That which we cannot have - whether it’s the boyfriend of a friend, a movie star or someone who is not for us - is usually what we find most appealing and attracts us. However, there are not too many logical explanations for why we fall in love with the impossible. Perhaps it is because we read or see many stories of love or we really like suffering. |
